LGBT (or GLBT) is an initialism employed since the 90’s as a self-identification by what was once referred to as the “gay neighborhood”. It refers jointly to “lesbian, homosexual, bi sexual, and trans gender” folks. In use since the 90s, the expression “LGBT” is a variation of the initialism “LGB”, which itself began replacing the phrase “gay neighborhood” starting in the mid-to-late 80’s, which several within the community in question felt didn’t correctly represent all those to whom it referred.
The phrase LGBT is meant to highlight a diversity of “sexuality and gender identification-based cultures” and may also be used to refer to anybody who’s non-heterosexual instead of only to those who are gay, bi sexual, or trans gender. To acknowledge this inclusion, a popular variation adds the letter Q for people who identify as queer and questioning their sexual identification (e.g., “LGBTQ” or “GLBTQ”).
